Welcome to the Evan Evans Blog new area guide series.
These handy little pieces are filled with useful tips and inside info on specific areas of London. This week, we’re kicking things off with an exploration of Soho – the very heart of London’s nightlife and tourist scene.
Nestled between Oxford Circus, Picadilly and Charring Cross Road, it’s the very first place you should go to explore what it means to be a Londoner. Get lost amongst its winding streets and breathe in the hustle and bustle of one of the capital’s coolest districts.
Let’s take a look at some of the best things to do in Soho!
Shopping in Liberty London
Housed in a beautiful Georgian building, Liberty is definitely one of the most stunning places to shop in the city. Whether you’re hoping to drop a few quid or you just want to soak in the bedazzling decorations, don’t miss out on this one-of-a-kind shopping experience.
A show at the London Palladium
Owned by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group, the Palladium is the place to experience classic musical theatre, from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to Joseph and His Technicolor Dreamcoat. Right now, the theatre is hosting a unique take on Snow White starring the much-loved British comedian Dawn French.
Jazz at Ronnie Scott’s
Ronnie Scott’s isn’t just one of the best venues in the city; it’s one of the best in the world. The last time I visited, Prince just happened to be in the audience and hopped on stage for a few casual numbers. That’s the quality of musicians that hang out at this legendary venue.
Dinner on Old Compton Street
Old Compton Street is the place that up-and-coming restauranteurs end up when they’ve finally ‘made it’. You’ll find everything from Japanese to Brazillian food, to good old British pubs. The quality is second to none.
A classic Movie at the Prince Charles Cinema
Technically speaking, the Prince Charles is a street or two outside the borders of Soho. Seeing a movie at this unique venue, however, is such an experience that we had to include it here. Enjoy a cult classic in their unique concave cinema.
Get something for the kids at Hamley’s
This enormous toy shop has an international reputation for being a kid’s wonderland. It’s the oldest and largest in the world, with seven floors packed full of delightful gifts. If you have small children, you simply can’t miss out on this experience.
Strut your stuff on Carnaby Street
Carnaby has been associated with fashion, music and style for generations. You’ll find all sorts of boutique fashion outlets here, as well as some of the city’s coolest eateries. Head over for some lunch, shopping, or just to be seen.
See live music on Kingly Street
Ain’t Nothin’ But is one of the best live music venues in the city, with shows almost every night. Grab yourself a whiskey at the bar and enjoy some world-class blues.
Grab a cocktail on Wardour Street
With Adventure Bar, Soho Residence and Friendly Society all on one street, Wardour is one of the best places to relax with a tipple. You’re also perfectly placed to hit some of the best clubs in London, so grab a seat at the bar an order yourself up a treat.
