They say you don’t know what you’ve lost until it’s gone. Well, travel may be temporarily challenging, but you can still plan ahead for future school trips. When the world returns to normal, your students will be eager to explore unfamiliar destinations. But which locations offer the best educational experiences? There are literally too many to count, but here are a few of our favourite locations for School Trips in the UK.
Stonehenge, Wiltshire
Stonehenge may just be the most outstanding prehistoric monument in Europe. Some estimates suggest the site dates back to around 3000 BC and could’ve been used as a burial ground. It’s the perfect place to teach kids about the Bronze Age and Neolithic hunter-gatherers. You can also discuss topics like science, maths and geography. Get the kids discussing the stories and legends behind the site’s original use and construction methods.
Dover Castle, Kent
Dover Castle has played an important role in British history for over 2,000 years. Today, you can take the kids on an immersive tour of the grounds, complete with actors in medieval attire. During your visit, you’ll see the oldest Roman lighthouse in the nation and The Great Tower, where the kids will learn about the life of Henry II. Shedding light on more recent history are the Secret Wartime Tunnels of WWI.
Battle Abbey, East Sussex
Battle Abbey is probably the best place you can go to teach the kids about the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Your students can stand on the same site as the battle took place as well as learn about the events that lead up to this event that changed British history. You can still explore the Abbey remains while actors in costume recite stories about the Abbey. If William the Conqueror and King Harrold are coming up on your curriculum, we highly recommend a school trip to Battle Abbey.
Down House, Kent
Are you a science teacher trying to dream up the perfect school trip for your students? Down House, the family home of Charles Darwin from 1842 to 1882, is a top contender. Here, you’ll learn all about Darwin’s countless scientific discoveries and achievements. Students will also hear the tale of Darwin’s voyage aboard the Beagle. Down House isn’t just a great place to learn about one of the most highly regarded scientists in British history; because its interior remains largely untouched, it offers a great glimpse into 19th century life.
The Lake District
The list of educational trips on offer at The Lake District is endless. It’s one of the UK’s most impressive Natural Areas of Outstanding Beauty, home to postcard-perfect chocolate box villages. Your students will love exploring the Hill Top, Beatrix’s Potter’s former home, as well as museums that detail the area’s rich history. With plenty of tours on offer for large groups, you won’t struggle to find the perfect school trip in The Lake District.
London
The Great British Capital has hundreds of museums, many of them free. And who doesn’t love checking out dinosaur bones at the Natural History Museum or exploring space at the Science Museum. Plenty of tour guides can take you to the City’s architectural and historical landmarks, such as the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Westminster.
